PHILOSOPHICAL & POETIC COMICS - A NEW AND VANGUARDIST STYLE OF COMICS!

by Vinicius Oliveira Alves

From the 60s, the comics were the subject of studies by their artistic potential and media, its infinite possibilities and as a cultural event.

In the 70s, the comics had a break in the status quo, when artists especially in Europe, seeking new forms and concepts to make comics, breaking the traditionalism of counting sequential storytelling.

It is worth mentioning that period, the Metal Hurlant magazine for its innovative material, the Les Humanoids Associes group of innovative comic artists, authors such as Phillipe Druillet, Caza, Moebius and other so-called European and North American Underground; as innovative manifestations of storytelling in comics, showing focus, structure and diverse themes.

As in many fields of art, in the comics artists saw and felt the need to innovate their language and make your comic modernize into a new century.

Was that amid the economic crisis that Brazil would experience in the next decade, which brought the first manifestations of this evolution of comics in our country, and despite these influences shed new comic that would arise in Brazil was unique, rich content and artistic value and with a characteristic and own identity that we find only in their authors, Comics Poetic and Philosophical, they are a genuine evolution of graphic narrative process, including often subliminal, heraldry, break of paradigms, etc.

The so-called Poetic and Philosophical comics, showing a mixture of poetic and philosophical texts with innovative designs and structure differed much from traditional comics since its frames division to the format of balloons and with a perspective of reflection, self , the reference to the spiritual aspects of existence, critical to many of the dominant values in today's society.
The pioneers and artists who stood out in the movement are: Gazy Andraus, Edgar Franco, Flavio Calazans, Antonio Amaral, Eduardo Manzano, style precursors. There are also some artists of the medium carried forward work in this style in the same time as Henry Jaepelt, Wally Viana, Joacy Jamys, Luciano Irrthum, Al Greco, Rosemário H.S, Soter Bentes and Norival Bottos Jr,

On the other hand, in the same period, another group of artists initiated an equally innovative production, with philosophical and existential content, showing urban themes, despair and loneliness in the consumer society, foretelling one nihilistic future, influenced by post punk bands, darks and electronic that decade
Innovation in both arguments in the presentation of the drawings were also off in these comics.

Artists like Alberto Monteiro, Weaver, Yuri Hermuche, Law Tissot, Fabio Zimbres, Ricardo Borges, Dikos, Claudio C.M.S. They are significant names of this strand. Sometimes joined their hq's, in the same edition of a publication, self-titling Brotherhood Unusual.

Here it is worth mentioning that despite never having been related, the actual work of renowned artist Lorenzo Mutarelli in its first phase with albums like Transubstantiation, bastards and I love you Lucimar treasured elements similar to Poetic and Philosophical comics.

But with the artistic evolution and the emergence of new artists with influences from both styles, their own monikers Poetic and Philosophical and Existential Comics, were limited.

Artists such as Edgar Franco, with his research with comics in the virtual world, esoteric symbolism and its Aurora Post Apocaliptica, Flavio Calazans with their studies heraldica and subliminal messages; Gazy Andraus investing in spiritual and oriental themes, a fluid and free trace; Eduardo Manzano the most nihilistic of the group, mixing vampirism, mythology and urban tales; and sui generis Antonio Amaral an innovative artist in the extreme, using chemicals and mathematicians, mixed with folklore in his Hippocampus publication and other works; They created their own worlds and their own language mixing the two components and other elements, creating these modern comics with intelligent, innovative content that we agreed here called Neo Comics, including this revolutionary language is totally adapted to the revolution of information technology and cyberspace .

The term Neo Comics is best suited to the innovative features of these comics that break with traditional paradigms comics and show the language of the new century and a final incurssão of comics as sublime and pluralistic Art.

These artists have innovated the way to see and count the comics, believing in its diversity and plurality and seeking the evolution of comic language and intelligent search of them, in return for commercial interests.

Today we see a new generation of artists whose comics are direct influence of these pioneers of the 80s.

Both movements emerged in Brazil in the circuit of fanzines and alternative publications, as they had no immediate release in major publications, given the character of national publications and the profile of the own Brazilian player, almost mostly submitted exclusively to the commercial market north comics Americans and more recently the manga.

Mindful of this new wave of comics and the number of artists who followed these trends, the comic artist, researcher, teacher and doctor by the French Sorborne, Henrique Magalhães, created in 1995 his comic label called Fantasy Brand, which in addition to the pioneering post artists outside the major publishing houses, created in February 95 Tyli magazine Tyli totally dedicated to the study and publication of poetic-philosophical and existential comics, with the development of language the same as quoted above, and seeking to cover a greater number of trends within the genre, the magazine was renamed Mandala in May 1998, still today the pioneer and unique in the genre.

the fact should be added to the Fantasy Brand still have released albums like War of Flavio Calazans Ideas, Agartha and Transessência Edgar Franco, Ternary MEN Gazy Andraus and Hqs Eduardo Manzano, Yuri Hermuche, etc., placing on the market comic varguardistas work that would hardly be published by major publishers interested solely in commercial profit.

It is important to remember and add that these comics as avant-garde just emerged in Brazil, a country where every cultural manifestation is seen almost as superfluous and almost suffocated from its embryonic stage. One can imagine that these artists and their art from the beginning and even today are fought by some people with a limited and conservative vision of comics, usually people connected and consumers exclusively commercial comics and linked to mercantilist interests them.

Thanks to academic training, intelligence and content of the works of these artists, their comics surpassed empty criticism and flock to the future to write his chapter in the important book of comics. If comics got their place in the sun, such as auto level art, these Neo-Comics definitely settle the sequential art as artistic excellence object.
